So, you’ve decided to remodel your bathroom. What are the first steps you should take?
Before the actual renovation begins, there are a few things you should do and think through:
What is your goal for this bathroom remodel?
This is often the most important question, but the easiest one to forget or just give a few seconds of thought.
Take a few days to sit down and really think this through: What is your goal for this bathroom remodel?
You want to know exactly what you’re trying to accomplish for this bathroom remodel so that you can plan and choose materials that meet the vision you have thought out. Otherwise, you risk wasting time, effort, and money on a remodel that doesn’t meet your expectations.
For example, if your goal is to build a luxurious oasis where you can relax and enjoy a spa-like experience, you probably need to focus your renovations on the things that will make you feel like you’re in a spa. On the other hand, if your goals are for cost savings or increased function, you probably need to focus on those areas and not on the spa-like experience.
Make a list of everything that you want in a new bathroom
Once you have decided on your main goal for remodeling your bathroom, make a list of things you want and don’t want out of your new bathroom and rank them.
If your goal is to make it more useable, think about what activities need to happen there – bathing, tooth brushing, makeup applying – and answer this: How would you like to accomplish these things? Do you want a large vanity with tons of drawers for storage? Do you want to use the same space for storage that is currently in that room or do you want to add some cabinets or shelving?
If your goal is to create a nice relaxing spa-like experience, maybe you want a large soaking tub, a bright window with lots of natural light, or a walk-in shower?
At this point, throw everything and the kitchen sink (pun intended) on your list. Once that list is exhaustive, whittle it down to just what you really want, what fits within your budget, and the design style you choose.
Choose your design style
It’s best to determine the overall style you want at this point rather than wait until you have chosen all of your materials and fixtures. That way, the style will flow throughout your bathroom and you’ll have a cohesive look.
What you do choose is up to your personal taste. But if you’re having a tough time deciding, go back to your vision and goal for the bathroom. If you have chosen to create a spa-like environment, then perhaps traditional or contemporary styles will work best for that purpose.
Here’s a brief overview of some design styles you can choose from:
Traditional: Traditional design is old-fashioned. It’s very popular in rural areas but also works well in big cities such as LA or San Diego.
Contemporary: Contemporary design uses clean lines and sleek materials to create a modern look. Minimalism is often part of this style.
Industrial: Industrial design takes the modern look to the extreme. It is very popular in big cities.
Scandinavian: Scandinavian design takes a minimal approach but still contains depth and warmth. It’s loved by many because it’s so simple, yet striking.
One last tip here – depending on what style you have chosen to decorate your house with, you may consider choosing your bathroom design scheme accordingly.
For example, if you have chosen a mid-century modern decorating style for your home, perhaps a mid-century style bathroom remodel would go best in the space.
Consider the layout of your new bathroom
The layout of your new bathroom should be dictated by what you need it to do. I’m not just talking about traffic flow, but think about the small details that go into planning the space.
If you want more storage and are planning on adding built-in storage, think about how best to utilize those spaces. If you will be adding a tub, think about the space needed to get in and out of it.
Of course, a design expert can help you figure all of this out, but it is helpful to know these things upfront so you can communicate your needs with them.
Call companies who specialize in bathrooms
At this point, you should have a good idea of what you want your bathroom to look like. Pick 3-4 companies that specialize in the remodeling of bathrooms and get them to come out for an estimate, and you’ll know if the amenities you desire fit within the budget you have allocated.
If not, they can help you scale back and cut costs, while still creating the bathroom that achieves your goals.
But there you go! If you follow these steps, you are well on your way to creating a beautiful bathroom that is functional and perfect for you!
